As your skincare regime depends on your skin type, your hair regime depends on your hair type. Knowing your hair type is not easy. Of the various categories, your hair can be straight, wavy, coily, or curly. After you know your hair type, you can find the right products for your hair.
Let’s find out your exact hair type!
The first thing to know is your hair texture. This stands for the shape and pattern of your natural hair strands. To know the texture of your hair don’t put any products in and air dry your hair after washing it.
Straight hair is referred to as Type 1 which means that hair remains straight after drying. If the hair has a slight curve or bends after drying, then the hair is wavy which is known as Type 2. If the strand has defined curls and loops, then you have curly hair known as Type 3. If you have tight curls, zig-zag patterns, or spirals in the hair after drying, then your hair is coily known as Type 4.
Structure of Hair Strands
Hair structure matters a lot because you use the products that react well with different hair and styling products. Hair structure means the thickness of the strands. Hairs are categorized into three: fine hair, medium hair, and coarse hair (thick hair).
The best way to know the structure of your hair is to take a single strand of hair and lay it flat on the surface. As a comparison take a single piece of sewing thread and lay it side by side on the table.
If the hair is thinner than the thread, then you most definitely have fine hair. If the hair is thicker than the thread, then you have coarse or thick hair. And if you have hair that is neither thick nor thin, then you have medium hair.
Thin hairs are very delicate and cannot hold curls that well. Medium hair can hold most of the styles and can hold any shape for much longer. Coarse hair can hold curls or styling tricks very well but it takes a lot of time to style.
Porosity of Hair
Hair porosity means how much moisture and product can your hair absorbs. This tells you about how much and what kind of product you should put in your hair. Hair porosity is divided into 3 categories known as high porosity, normal porosity, and low porosity.
If your hair sinks to the bottom in the water bowl then you have high porosity and your hair can absorb moisture very well. If the hair floats above the bottom of the bowl but sinks, then you have normal porosity. If the hair floats, then you have low porosity and your hair does not absorb moisture easily.
High porosity hair absorbs moisture very easily and quickly and loses the moisture easily as well which means that hair becomes dry and brittle. For such hair, hair masks that nourish the hair, oils provide extra moisture and prevent damage to the hair.
Low porosity hair block water absorption, so these types of hairs, require products to be used when hair is damp so that they can be distributed and absorbed easily.
Scalp Condition and Moisture
The scalp is the base for all hair. If the scalp is damaged, then the hair will definitely be damaged. You can have a dry scalp or an oily scalp. Oily hair appears greasy and flat the next day of a wash.
A dry scalp needs a gentler touch and is more likely to cause dandruff in the hair. This type of scalp needs natural oils to remain healthy and moist.
It is essential for you to know your hair type. A thorough understanding will lead to better hair care as well as more pronounced and healthy hair without the added hair loss.
